Kendo

What is Kendo?

Kendo (剣道) or the way of the sword is the use of the principles of ancient Samurai Sword fighting to achieve discipline in one’s life.

This elegant art is practiced with the ‘shinai’, the bamboo sword that replaces the katana and the padded protective armour known as “Kendo-gu”.

The concept of Kendo is to discipline the human character through the application of the principles of the katana (sword).

Through the journey of perfecting the art known as Kendo, the principles of the sword are to be strictly practiced, preached, and followed.

Discipline is a core outcome of Kendo. It teaches you to respect life, of yours and the people around you.

The purposes of practicing Kendo are,

  1. To mold the mind and body.

  2. To cultivate a vigorous spirit through correct and rigid training.
  3. To strive for improvement in the art of Kendo.
  4. To hold human courtesy and honour in high esteem.
  5. To associate with others with sincerity and forever pursue the cultivation of oneself.

Individuals disciplined through the art of Kendo are more capable of loving their country and society while contributing to the development of the culture and promoting peace and prosperity among those who surround them.
