KYUDO

What is Kyudo

Kyudo (弓道) is a Japanese martial art that translates to ‘The Way of the Bow’. It is also considered as ‘Meditation in Action’.

Yumi (Japanese bow) retired from its position as a weapon of war and evolved into a form of elegant martial art that disciplines the mind and body, gradually becoming an art form.

Time adds value to the art. The same was true for Kyudo. Over time, Kyudo became a stronger brand of martial arts.   Presently, Kyudo lives on as a spiritual journey of the people who choose to live the way of the bow.

At Budo Sri Lanka, Kyudo is one of the 6 different forms of art we teach. It consists of different stages and each has its benefit to the practitioner along with a meditative element.

Kyudo consists of the following,

  • Shin Zen Bi (Truth, goodness & beauty)
  • Reigi (Respect)
  • Sha-Ho-hattetsu (8 fundamental techniques)
  1. Footing
  2. Correcting your posture
  3. Prepping the bow
  4. Raising the bow
  5. Drawing the bow
  6. Completing the draw
  7. Release of the arrow
  8. Maintaining the mind in “Zanshin” state and lowering the bow
